Spectro Analytical Labs Ltd. has added yet another feather in its cap in the field of providing quality testing, when it recently received an approval and authorization for food testing from Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). Food Safety and Standards Authority of India is an independent statutory body which has been set up under the Food Safety Standards Act (FSSA) 2006, and it is under the administrative control of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. As per this act, FSSAI has been mandated to, besides fulfilling a number of other responsibilities, specify an appropriate system for enforcing scientifically proven standards for all articles of food (like raw, processed and packaged), and to monitor and regulate their manufacture, storage, distribution, sale and import, in order to fulfill the primary objective of ensuring the availability of wholesome and safe food for human consumption. The Food Safety Standards Act 2006 has been enacted to consolidate the various previously existing laws related to food items, like Prevention of Food Adulteration Act (1954), Fruit Products Order (1955), Meat Food Products Order (1973), Vegetable Oil Products (Control) Order (1947), Edible Oils Packaging (Regulation) Order (1988), Milk and Milk Products Order (1992) etc. The enactment of this law has facilitated the creation of a single reference point for addressing all issues related to food items. The Food Safety and Standards Regulations 2011 came into force from August 2011, and they provide the food business companies with the mechanism of registration and licensing with the aim of ensuring quality and safety of available food items in the Indian food market. The mechanism includes regular investigations (as per pre-determined test intervals), by the food companies, of the raw food ingredients, water etc. which are finally combined through various processing technologies to produce a great number of food items. To achieve the aforementioned objective, the food companies need to avail of the testing services provided by recognized/approved laboratories. Spectro is one such laboratory.
